I guess it is not unlike being a public servant, and attemptiing to run a country. The citizen-guests expect much. In this respect, Governor Fawlty's "flaw" is – he actually cares about ruling well. Which can in turn be seen as a critique of the Ruling Elite, who seem unruffled no matter how things go, for the citizen-guests.

They once had a Fawlty Towers Marathon on public access tv, here in Canada, and if you were lucky enough to own a VCR which recorded off the television screen, you could record all the episodes.

"Manuel has moved to the left side of your screen." "Manuel has moved to the right side of your screen." (…..blessed silence….) (…..blessed silence…..) "MANUEL HAS NOW MOVED TOWARD YOUR SCREEN! HE IS REACHING OUT OF IT! HE WILL DEVOUR YOU!"

I'm willing to bet that Fawlty Towers closed down after Basil the Rat causing Basil to lose his business and I bet Cybill left him sometime after.
